Frequently Asked Questions

What materials do I need to buy? Where can I buy them?

PIPING Pipe students need to have a practice chanter and the " Beginning the Bagpipe" book by Sandy Jones. Eventually students will need to buy their own set of bagpipes (typically after a year of instruction on practice chanter). DRUMMING Drum students will need a drum pad and sticks. RESOURCES

How long will it take me to learn to play the bagpipe?

A dedicated student might spend 6 months to a year learning basic fingerwork and tunes on the practice chanter. Once they master the practice chanter, the student may spend an additional year learning how to setup, maintain, wrestle with, and finally... play the bagpipe. Know that playing the bagpipe is not easy... the journey is the reward!

What's it like being part of the band?

The Williamsburg Pipes and Drums are a non-competition band. We play for local events and charities around Williamsburg, Virginia. As an individual piper, you may have the opportunity to play additional events as well. Band practice is typically every Wednesday at 7pm at Berkley's Green Club House ( map). Note that practice is right after student lessons which typically run from 6:30pm-7pm.
